Biography
Beth Harland studied at The Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, and Royal College of Art, London and completed a practice-based PhD at the University of Southampton. She is Professor of Fine Art, Director of Insight and Associate of the Institute for Social Futures at Lancaster University.
She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Contemporary Painting, co-editing issues on Painting and Cinema and Painting and Time. As an artist she has exhibited and curated widely, most recently Behind The Eyes; making pictures, Gallery North, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and painting/tableau/stage, Urban Space, Columbus Ohio and The Seven Billionth Citizen (international video collaboration, exhibition and book), exhibited in Egypt, UK and Brazil. Her recent publications include Painting: Critical and Primary Sources, a four-volume work published by Bloomsbury Press in 2015. She is principal investigator of Picturing Perception, a research project in collaboration with the Centre for Vision and Cognition, University of Southampton; publications include experimental eye-tracking studies of spectatorship. Forthcoming projects include: Impermanent Durations, a series of exhibitions and symposia: Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, 2016; Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, Melbourne, following an iAIR residency at RMIT Melbourne, 2016; Peter Scott Gallery, Lancaster, 2017.
